Introduction to Yoga as a Christian Discipline

The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word yuj, which means to yoke- to join- to unite with. Yoga is about union –union of our whole being-body, mind and spirit-union with others-union with creation- and it’s ultimate goal or mission is to experience samahdi – union with God-the Source-the Creator of all that lives and has being. Yoga is not a religion but an ancient way of living based in divine inspiration and revelation garnered from many sacred texts.

The word Christianity is a religion derived from followers of Jesus Christ , based on the bible as sacred scripture. Christianity has been with us for about 2000 years. The main mission of the Christian Church is to restore all people to unity with God and each other-in Christ. Christ- The Way, the Truth and the Life- intended for us by God.

God has been revealing His will and His way to humanity throughout the ages. We are in a spiritual evolution at all times. Jesus was and is the fullness of the Way, the Truth and the Life that God continues to reveal to humanity and calls us to follow. It could be said that Jesus is Samahdi- complete union with God. The goal of both Christianity and yoga.

There are many similarities between the principles and teachings of yoga and the teachings of Jesus Christ. In this 12 week class we will explore those similarities between yogic scripture and the Christian bible. We will look at how this study may give us fresh insights into the life, ministry and example of Jesus Christ. We will also look at how we might apply what we learn to our own faith walk as seekers of truth on the evolutionary path back to our primal paradisiac state of perfection-created in God’s image and likeness.

Along with didactic teaching and interactive dialogue each weekly class will include an asana ( posture) practice as well as breathing exercises and ending relaxation. Each class is 90 minutes in length.
